The Ministry of Transport and Communications is preparing the documents over a new call for selection of a low-cost airline that would operate four new destinations from the Skopje airport to Spain and Norway, as well as a direct flight from the Ohrid airport to a European capital. Moreover, the call for selection of a national airline is to be released in the first half of 2015.
"We will again offer subsidies up to EUR 5 million in the next three years. This would open new destinations for Macedonian citizens, but also increase the number of passengers", said Minister of Transport and Communications on Monday.
According to him, the goal is to launch the flights to Spain and Norway in June or September at latest.
"The Ohrid airport capacity is still not fully utilized. We want to establish direct flights to European capitals in the coming period, primarily towards tourism development", added Janakieski.
He said WizzAir, the Government-subsidized airline, would not be given advantage over other companies.
"This is a call for new destinations, so any airlines can apply. The current airline operating from Macedonia will not be given any advantage", said Minister Janakieski.
He stressed the call over the selection of a consultant for establishment of national airline would be announced next week, providing the Public Procurement Council gives a positive opinion by the week-end.
"The selected consultant, the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Skopje airport concessionaire TAV should animate as much airlines as possible in offering their conditions. A package will be developed based on their conditions and what we can offer, followed by a public call for a national airline, hopefully in the first half off 2015", stressed Janakieski.
