Launched project for protection of Lake Dojran

The environmental training camp that starts today will last until until 18th this month in Dojran, marks the starts the project “Education and capacity building for protection Lake Dojran, a priority area for biodiversity.”



The project aims at creating local group for preserve biodiversity of the Lake Dojran by strengthening local capacities and networking.

Participants of the camp will be high school students from Strumica, Valandovo, Bogdanci and Gevgelija, as well as fishing and hunting companies from Dojran, while the experienced ecologists from the Macedonian Ecological Society will implement the training. The camp will include practical and theoretical training in environmental monitoring. Participants will have the opportunity to use practical techniques and methods for ecological research and to attend training on project management.

Dojran is one of the key priority areas for biodiversity in the Mediterranean “hot spot” area for biodiversity, globally important area for birds and important plant area. Since 1977 it has been protected as monument of nature, and in 2011 the management of this protected area is allocated to the municipality Dojran.

Conservation Project Dojran is funded by the partnership fund for protecting critical ecosystems, which is a joint initiative of the French Development Agency, European Union, Global Environment Facility, the Government of Japan, the MacArthur Foundation, and the World Bank. The main goal of the initiative is to ensure the involvement of civil society in protecting biodiversity.
