Macedonia and Albania Get UNESCO Protected Zone

Macedonian Environment and Spatial Planning Minister Nurhan Izairi and his Albanian counterpart Lefter Koka, will hold a joint ceremony in the Albanian city of Korca on Monday, to inaugurate the Ohrid-Prespa protected region.

The region that spans across both countries, and which is being protected for its biodiversity, will receive a certificate from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

This biodiversity protection zone saw its nomination for UNESCO protection approved in June, at the International UNESCO Council held in Sweden, making it the 14th cross-border zone in the world.

The inaugural ceremony will include representatives from the Macedonian and Albanian Parliaments, local municipalities, international organizations and UNESCO.
