Despite its 19-mile length, Lake Ohrid is relatively unknown to tourists outside of Europe and the Mediterranean due to the fact that Macedonia and Albania have only recently turned to tourism as viable options for their economies.
During the summer, its waters are for boating, fishing, and swimming. Back in the 80s, a 2,000 year-old ancient theater was discovered on its shores by accident during a construction project. Which is funny. In North America, we find arrowheads, not amphitheaters.
We spent a few days in the town of Ohrid in Macedonia in the northeast corner, enjoying the beautiful scenery and the fresh-caught fish from the lake. Head out on this photo tour from our visit last fall, a glimpse of what you can expect to see if you were to visit in the next few months:
The wild beaches are insanely beautiful, as those near Ljubaniste village.
Extraordinary old monasteries as St. Petka monastery attract many tourists as well.
