Listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979, you can find the majestic Ohrid Lake between the mountainous border of Macedonia in the southwest and Albania’s east. Macedonia’s largest lake, Ohrid stretches for 18 miles and has a depth of 945 feet. Its stunning scenery and calm, clear waters are an inspiring sight that has kept travellers coming to its edge for thousands of years. The springs of the surrounding mountains fill most of the lake, with the rest flowing in from three rivers, creating a unique biological reserve of flora and fauna, including over 200 endemic species that draw biologists, botanists and fishermen from all over Europe and the world.
When you’ve had enough of bathing in this incredible pool, you can explore Ohrid City. A historically religious site with 365 churches (one for each day of the year), this town-on-the-hill offers breathtaking works of art and architecture in an area that has remained unspoilt by the demands of modern times. Many hotels take advantage of the view of the lake, and a wander through the market and lanes of the old town and port of Varos are particularly splendid.
