As of June 30, the low cost airline Wizz Air will fly from Skopje to Barcelona every Tuesday and Saturday at a price of MKD 1,799 (EUR 30). This has been the price Macedonian citizens can travel from Skopje to Oslo from June 29.
In addition to these two destinations and according to the agreement of the Macedonian government to subsidize low-budget flights, Wizz Air introduces destinations from the airport "Alexander the Great" to Hamburg and to Nuremberg every Wednesday and Sunday from July1, this year at a cost of MKD 1,499, or MKD 1.199. Also, by the end of June, Wizz Air will be flying to Friedrichshafen at a price of MKD 1.199. So it will be the price for the route from Ohrid airport "St. Apostle Paul "to Basel as" Wizz Air "will operate it twice a week from July 1.
John Stevenson, vice-director of Wizz Air today in the presence of the Minister of Transport and Communications Mile Janakieski announced increased frequency of the current 14 routes, and an inclusion of a third aircraft type Airbus 320 based in Skopje. From June weekly flights to Malmö increase from five to seven, to Gothenburg from three to four, and for Cologne, Frankfurt, Milan and Paris instead twice Wizz Air will fly three times a week.
“The new lines are creating opportunities through cheap flights to visit the desired and most attractive cities in Europe. Create conditions Macedonian citizens to visit global sporting events, cultural events, and the business community to expand business contacts”, said Minister Janakieski, noting that the subsidies from the state in the amount of about EUR 5 million are simultaneously helping to attract more foreign tourists and foreign investments.
Janakieski stressed that only through subsidized airlines in 2013 the number of passengers has increased by 236 percent. Last year more than 500,000 passengers were transported, which is 50 percent more than the 2013.
According to Janakieski, after a figure of 1.27 million passengers in the Macedonian airports last year was reached, the target for this year would be to go beyond the number 1.5 million.
According to Stevenson, the increase in the Wizz Air quota in Skopje and adding Ohrid to their network creates more opportunities for travel and a wider choice of destinations.
“We hope that this will result in creating more jobs locally and further boost tourism in the country. We expect that the six new routes and increased capacity of the existing ones will be accepted by the users knowing that we enable more low-cost flights to Macedonia”, said Stevenson.
The New routes of Wizz Air are in line with the agreed contract the airline signed with the Ministry of Transport and Communications on the 15th of this month for financial support for the operation of airports in Skopje and Ohrid in the next three years.
Wizz Air in the past three years with subsidies from the Macedonian government have been operating flights from Macedonia.
In cooperation with the Macedonian airports concessionaire TAV Macedonia, the Hungarian airline has launched new destinations by organizing special Free Flight for 50 wards of the House Orphanage October 11 from the airport Alexander the Great to the airspace over the Ohrid Lake.
