Macedonia: Conservation Activities at St. Nikola Church in the Manastir Village Run The church of St. Nikola in the village of Manastir, in the Mariovo region of central Macedonia.
Conservation and reparation activities of the St. Nikola church in the village of Manastir in the Mariovo region, one of the most significant vestiges of the Byzantine culture in Macedonia, continues with the support of the Macedonian Ministry of Culture.
"To provide adequate protection of this important cultural monument dating from the 11th and the 13th century, expert teams of the Institute for Protection of Culture Monuments and Museum in Prilep have prepared in the recent period a comprehensive study on the conservation and restoration measures of the fresco-painting and the architecture of the edifice. Experts are intensively working on conservation of the fresco-painting and on constructive consolidation of the foundations, which also comprises archaeological research of the church St. Nikola," said today the Ministry of Culture.
The St. Nikola church in the village of Manastir was erected in 1095 and received its current look in 1266. According to the architecture, the church is a three-naval basilica and is one of the most important Byzantine period monuments of culture that contains extraordinary frescos, such as "The Holy Mother and the Angels", "St. Nikola" and others.
This type of painting, which is very rare can only be found, besides in the Manstir monastery, in St. Sofia church in Ohrid and in the church in the village of Kurbinovo, said the Culture Ministry.
According to archaeologists, the history of the monastery can be divided into two stages. During the first, the monastic life was constituted, and during the second, stretching from the end of 14th and the beginning of the 15th century, the monastery grow into a developed civilization, economic, cultural and spiritual center of Mariovo.
