Church “St. John Kaneo” in Ohrid is among 65 most beautiful churches in Europe according to Italian RAI STORIA.



There is no written information about the history of the church. Today it is not determined whether this monastery church was built on the cult place. Although there are no reliable historical facts for the church, its life may be followed by the end of the XIII and early XIV century. At certain period occurs interruption of monastic life and neglect of the church (XVII – XIX centuries). In the XIX century are built four lateral arches and are built the annexes on the northern, western and southern side , which are now eliminated.

The church has rectangular base with cruciform in interior space, three-sided apse on the east side and octagonal dome that rests on four right pillars using pendentives. Built of stone in the bottom with alternating horizontal and vertical sections of carved limestone and brick in the upper part. The apse and dome on the east side have the look ceramic- plastic decorating on the facades.

Today Kaneo saved good deal of original frescoes although some modifications were made ​​in this regard, but until today it has retained the original charm.
