In order to speed up tourism development and to attract guests that are known as “bigger spenders”, Municipality of Ohrid plans to subsidize regular airline flights from Western countries to Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport.
In this regard a hearing is scheduled for Thursday’s meeting of the City Council, which will focus on the publication of open call to subsidize airlines. Mayor Nikola Bakracheski expected that airlines will show interest in establishing direct flights to Ohrid airport.
“Our commitment is to start with seasonal flights in 2015, and in 2016, 2017 and 2018, with regular flights throughout the year. As local government, we will subsidize one line from Luton airport in England in order to attract more English tourists who have the reputation of being the best customers according to the relevant institutions and magazines dealing with tourism trends. Our intention is to attract at least 25,000 English tourists in the next three years in Ohrid,” Bakracheski said.
He said that at the same time, the Government will publish open call to subsidize another lines from the Ohrid airport with Basel pointed as possible destinations as well as one or two lines to other European destinations.
Negotiations on these flights are led by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, which is responsible for the entire tender procedure.
