Sunken boats possible new diving attraction in Struga

The boat puller and six-seven boats connected as coaches were found by the underwater archaeologists from Natural Museum “Dr. Nikola Nezlobinski” in Struga in underwater archaeological site in the central coast of Struga about 400 meters from the shore of Lake Ohrid, reports MIA.

The museum director Sasho Cvetkoski informs that the boats are from the First World War, which, according to him, were probably borne as part of composition that were transporting goods and at some point there was submerged. Boats, as he explained, are at the depth of about 6-7 meters, and last discovered composition is eight meters.

- I think that during the years it can grow into attraction, the objects found in can be conserved and presented. We have determined the position and quantity of the wreck, and the content they had. Even if those material remains down, we have established the type of ship, the company that did and its use. I hope that in the coming years we will establish it as a very interesting site for all those who deal with or professionals and amateurs divers, said Cvetkoski.

The underwater archaeologist Nikola Paskali, who participated in the research expedition, believes that wrecks should be explored archaeological, document and position, to make drawings and presented to the public to become tourist attraction.

- All worldwide diving centers attract tourists with shipwrecks, settlements, traces of some people’s lives before. For example in the case of Bulgaria, they have deliberately sunk ship making it tourist attraction since the region had nothing to offer, said Paskali. This underwater archeological site, which will be investigated in detail next year, was little known in the professional and cultural community, and the citizens of Struga.
