Ohrid: Balkan Festival of Folk Songs and Dances Starts Today

The national folk ensemble “Tanec”, together with the folk ensemble “Goce Delcev” from Bulgaria’s Nevrokop, will open Sunday the 53rd edition of the Balkan Festival of Folk Songs and Dances in Ohrid.

The Speaker of the Macedonian Assembly, Trajko Veljanoski, patron of this event, will traditionally open the festival.

The oldest festival of its kind in Macedonia will, this year again, offer rich and diverse artistic program, featuring in particular ensembles and groups that nourish traditional Balkan folk songs and dances.

Twelve ensembles and groups from Bulgaria, Croatia, Montenegro, Poland, Slovenia, Greece, Serbia and Turkey will partake in the five-day festival, as well as three groups of Macedonians living in Australia.

The Balkan Festival of Folk Songs and Dances is an international folklore event established in 1962, originally titled as the Ohrid Festival of Amateur Folk Dancers and Folk Bands. In 1967, the Festival was restructured and ever since it has been hosting vocal and instrumental bends and soloists presenting the authentic tradition and culture through dances, songs, customs, traditional costumes and instruments.

The Festival is a member of the UNESCO Association of CIOFF (Council International of the Organization of Folklore Festivals) and IOFA (International Organization of Folklore Art).

The event is organized by the Ohrid Culture Center “Grigor Prlicev”, supported by the Macedonia’s Ministry of Culture.
